2011 - New Release Shares Heartbreak of Unplanned Teenage Pregnancy and Its Repercussions
The Bond
is released by Lynda May
Laura is a happy child growing up sheltered and innocent in the loving embrace of her middle-class parents. She grows up during the time of America’s greatest economic growth and becomes a teenager when Americans are just learning of Vietnam and the Beatles. One summer while working at a neighborhood store with her best friend, she meets Bobby, the boy of her dreams. Laura’s innocence soon disappears as she finds herself pregnant and unwed at the age of sixteen. Her family’s life is thrown into turmoil.
Laura is forced to give up the baby for adoption. Her parents shun her and her best friend is forbidden from seeing her. Laura must attend school while trying to hide her shame and the evidence of her love for Bobby. She is trapped, with no support, no one on her side. She is left alone with only her thoughts and the child growing inside her for company, dreading the day when she must give him up. Heartbroken, Laura said goodbye to her infant son on the day she gave birth.
The Bond tells the story of a young and confused girl, and the only choice she was forced to make at a very early age as well as the lifelong consequences. Giving up her baby for adoption changed the course of Laura’s life, affecting her subsequent marriage and her search for happiness. Years later she is given the opportunity to try to contact her son, hoping to heal some of her wounds at last. Author Lynda May’s novel is based on a true story, years before Roe v. Wade, when families were torn apart because they didn’t have a choice in pregnancy and birth.
